Earlier this evening I finished work, and because I often lie to myself, I thought I’d idly watch some YouTube and research some stuff for blog posts and whatever. Usually, that means I’m going to zone out in front of the tv and do nothing productive, and tonight was no exception.
The first video I came upon is a lovely rant from one of my favorite YouTubers, Abby Williamson, in which she talks about bridal makeup, FaceTune, etc.
Abby is a photographer in Seattle and has shot weddings, so she knows what she’s talking about. She also shoots concerts and junk, and you can see some of her work here.
This got me thinking about my own Instagram and other social media photos. I’ve never used anything like FaceTune or Photoshop to retouch photos I post. It’s honestly never occurred to me. How am I supposed to show off my mediocre makeup skills or skin problems if I’m retouching photos? It seems disingenuous, almost like I’d be pretending to be someone else.
But now I’m thinking… would I be a more popular blogger/Instagram person if I was sneakier about my photos? As it is, I don’t give a ton of thought to what ends up on Instagram. It’s mostly things I think are pretty or cool or funny. As far as selfies, I don’t post them unless I think I look particularly good, or I’m doing something weird that might entertain someone. Should I be more intentional and use the lighting/makeup/software tricks at my disposal?
I think this leads down kind of a dangerous road, for me anyway. I can fake confidence like a pro, but it’s usually a facade. I’m pretty insecure about the way I look, especially now that I’m in my mid-30s. From afar it doesn’t appear that I’ve aged much since I was 20, but the closer you get the more you see the fine lines, the eye crinkles, the damage from years of drinking and smoking, dehydration, not wearing sunscreen, just generally being a complete idiot. I couldn’t just listen to Baz Luhrmann and wear some damned sunscreen. Of course not.
See, I’m already spiraling.
What are your thoughts on this subject? Do you use FaceTune or keep it simple? What do you think about influencers who edit the crap out of their photos?
