I blame you Marie Kondo.
I get the concept of purging the things I don’t need from my life. I did a ton of that before we moved to Albany, though not as much as Dan would have liked. He owns basically nothing, other than his tv, some speakers, model airplanes and Hot Wheels cars, so I don’t take him seriously when he complains about my stuff.
What about this concept of getting rid of things that don’t “spark joy”? Is everything we own supposed to bring us joy? Maybe there isn’t enough joy in my life, but that sounds a little insane. If everything I touched brought me joy I’d be exhausted by the end of the day.
Isn’t some of our stuff supposed to have a purely utilitarian function? For example, I don’t look at my bedding or my dishes and feel joy. Those things exist in my life because I like cozy beds and food. Am I missing something?
I will admit that I’m on board with it in regard to my clothes. I’ve been holding on to far more stuff than I need “just in case”; a lot of it is from the early 2000s and even if it did fit me I’ll likely never wear it again. My weight has fluctuated significantly over the last 15 years, and only once have I lost weight so rapidly that it’s been necessary to have a backup wardrobe. I don’t think it’s likely something like that will happen again. I would like to lose weight because I’m the biggest I’ve ever been in my life, and having these clothes reminds me that I hate my body at the moment, so ok Ms. Kondo, I’ll listen to you here.
So what’s the best way to rid myself of all of these things? Do I donate, or try to sell them? Is it worth trying to use something like ThredUp or Poshmark to make some cash while also sending my clothes to good homes where they’ll actually be worn? I’d love to hear from any of you with experience using these services; is it worth the time and effort?
And since so many other people are purging, what are the rules for buying new stuff? The idea of going to Goodwill in rich neighborhoods is really appealing to me right now.
Who’s on the Marie Kondo train? Has tidying up really changed your life? I’m so curious and want to know all about this, so if you’ve posted something on your blog about the topic leave the post link in the comments!
