Creepy AF podcasts: Lore

I love podcasts. I’m now subscribed to more than 60 of them, and I listen basically all day, every day. While I’m working, while I’m driving, sometimes even when I’m in the shower. I know this is when normal people listen to music, but music doesn’t keep my brain engaged. I zone out, and I need my brain for life things.

For the last few days I’ve been listening to Lore. I’m totally late to the party on this, since it’s been out for years. If you’re an Amazon Prime member and browse their original series page, you’ve likely seen the show that’s based on this podcast. I haven’t seen it yet, but I hear good things.

So the podcast is the perfect mix of history, true crime, and creepy stories. The host, Aaron Mahnke, has an awesome voice and he’s an excellent storyteller. The episodes are relatively short, generally running around 25 minutes, but he still manages to convey all of the pertinent information from the stories. It’s obviously well researched, which I appreciate, being the huge history and paranormal nerd that I am.

Some of the stories I’ve listened to so far have been truly chilling, but not because of the ghosts; Aaron goes into detail about the crimes and tragedies that supposedly caused the hauntings. The Hoosac Tunnel, the Jersey Devil, H.H. Holmes, the Villisca Axe Murders, all discussed in depth without being gory or reveling in the horrors that humans inflict on each other. He also doesn’t interject his opinion or speculation, unlike some other podcasts that deal with the same kind of subject matter.

I’m listening to this on the Podcast Republic app on my phone, but you can also find it in iTunes, Stitcher, and various other podcast apps. I highly recommend it, though I wouldn’t advise watching it at night, alone, while your significant other is out of town for work. Just as an example…
