There’s a new brand at Ulta: Flesh, the prestige brand from Revlon.
Where do I even start?
First, the name. Flesh. I’m not the kind of person who gets weird about certain words, but the name alone makes me think of Buffalo Bill. IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN!
Ahem. The tagline for this brand is “Real, skin-flattering makeup that redefines “flesh color.””
I’m on board with this idea. It’s great that they wanted to create a more inclusive brand, and the shade selection for their foundation is great. There are 40 shades, and it’s actually a range of colors, not 30 shades of beige, 5 light shades and 5 dark shades.
The first problem that I have with this particular product is the name: the Firm Flesh Thickstick Foundation. Um… who thought this was a good idea? Was it really necessary to name the foundation stick after a dick? I mean, they weren’t even subtle about it.
The second problem I have with this product is the price: for $18 you get 0.16 oz of product ($112.50/oz). I realize that stick foundations are generally smaller than liquids or powders, but to compare, the Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick is $46 for 0.25 oz ($184/oz), the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD foundation stick is $43 for 0.44 oz ($97.73/oz), and the Clinique Chubby in the Nude Foundation Stick is $25 for 0.21 oz ($125/oz). Sure, the shade ranges for these products is not great (at best), but they’re also from established brands. I feel like brands shouldn’t charge an assload for their products right out of the gate.
This isn’t the only product in the range; there’s an eyeshadow palette, cream lipsticks (Fleshy Lips and Strong Flesh… I’m not really sure what the difference is), liquid lipsticks, blush (Tender Flesh), highlighting drops (Ripe Flesh), powder (Flesh to Flesh) and stick highlighter (Touch Flesh), and a primer.
Ew. Ew ew EWWWWW.
Why are the names of these products so gross? Once again, I’m no prude, but how did this even happen? Was it a bunch of paunchy, middle-aged, balding dudes sitting around discussing Ripe Flesh?
I’m starting to see some reviews pop up on YouTube, but it seems like most of these influencers are spending their own money to procure the products. Do they not have PR, or did they not send stuff out in time for the release? I have to wonder. So far the reviews I’ve seen haven’t been wowed by any of the products, and they’ve all included comments about the packaging looking and feeling cheap compared to other prestige brands. I don’t put a ton of emphasis on packaging, but I at least expect it to be sturdy enough to survive a road trip in my Caboodle (no, it’s not an original. Yes, I will eventually do a post on my travel makeup).
I think it goes without saying that I won’t be investing in this line, but what do you think about it? Let’s discuss!
