Review: Garnier SkinActive BB Cream

It’s summer!

Ok, not really… I live in the frigid northeast, and while it was a balmy 70 degrees F yesterday, today it’s closer to 60 and raining.

Anyway, it’ll be summer eventually, and in the summer I wear less makeup. I don’t like to wear full coverage foundation normally unless I’m going to an event, and in the summer I generally prefer something even lighter than my normal medium coverage, so I lean toward BB or CC creams.

At this point, BB and CC creams are everywhere. I’ve never tried a drugstore version until I picked this up on Emily Noel’s recommendation. She mentioned in a recent video that she’s been using it recently and enjoying it, so I figured, why not? The BB cream I had was pretty (read: extremely) old, so it was time for something new.

Because I have oily skin I purchased the oily skin version, which claims to control shine, minimize pores, even skin tone, hydrate and protect (because sunscreen). This lives in my travel makeup and accompanied me on my trip to Florida last month; what better way to test a base product that to wear it in the heat and humidity of a Florida spring?

The consistency is thin and a bit runny, but a little bit goes a long way. I apply it with a brush to sheer it out a bit, but I’ve also used a sponge and it can be built up to a solid medium coverage.

Pros: The coverage is nice and evens out my skin tone. It does minimize pores and my skin feels hydrated when I’m wearing it. It holds up to my oily skin and doesn’t break down over the course of the day. It doesn’t smell bad. The rest of my makeup looks good on top of it. Even after sweating and humidity it still looks pretty good.

Cons: It doesn’t control oil, as I’m plenty shiny within a few hours of putting it on. It’s a little more dewy than I generally like. Not totally transfer proof. It only comes in one color, which is a smidge dark/orange for me. The price: $12.99 seems a little steep for a drugstore BB cream. The packaging isn’t ideal for a product of this consistency; it makes for a messy tube.

Overall, I like this well enough to keep using it. I’d prefer more shades, but I can make it work.

Have you used this product? Do you have a favorite BB cream I should try?

    One shade?! 😒😒😒
Anywho…. I went from having extremely oily skin years ago, to combo. With the skincare routine that I used through the winter (JAFRA Royal, which is amazing but insanely expensive), I actually experienced normal skin. Now that the heat has set in, oil production is on the rise.
With all of that said, colorescience sent me their All Calm CC cream. It’s a CC, not a BB (😅), but anyway….. I used this a few times this winter and really liked it. It has a nice, firm consistency that gives the fullest of a sheer coverage and sits/lasts pretty well through the day. I haven’t used it since my skin has gotten oily because it’s really a bit light for me right now, but by the way it feels, I imagine that it would be one of the better creams for oily skin; it has an almost cream to powder feel. For anyone that has redness, this will flat out knock it out! If you try it, I just advise that you make sure you get as close to a perfect match to your skin as possible (of course, but… u know) 😉

I can’t wait to hear what you think about the Colorscience CC cream. I’ve never used any of their products.
