I hope you’re having an awesome weekend! By the time this goes up I’ll likely be sitting in the frigid wasteland that is Orchard Park, NY in order to participate in something called (for my international readers) “tailgating”, a uniquely American activity involving standing in a parking lot in the freezing cold, binge drinking and eating as much meat as possible.
I’m only half joking.
My partner and his sister are season ticket holders for an American football team, the Buffalo Bills, and I occasionally go to the games to hang out with them. I don’t actually go TO the game since I find football tedious at best, but I do enjoy the tailgating. When it’s above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Which it will not be. But, a promise is a promise, and I will go and be happy about it.
Anyway, I’ve been thinking, the ads on my blog are a little on the annoying side. I do not like them. The problem is that I’d like to be making a little money from the work I put in here, if only to buy more makeup to try out and review for your reading pleasure. I don’t intend to make this a full-time gig or make a living at it, since I love my full-time job and at some point plan to do some different kinds of writing (a novel perhaps?), but making a little something might be nice.
I’ve gone back and forth with this dilemma for a few days, and I’ve decided to create a Patreon page and remove the actual ads for my blog. I haven’t fleshed out all of the details, but I plan to have special content for patrons. Maybe live chats, or (gasp) a video or two. Maybe a funny advice “column”. Something to make my patrons, if I have any, feel appreciated; I will be eternally grateful and I’ll want to show it in any way possible.
This is not to say that I’ll stop blogging if I don’t have any patrons, or that any of you, my lovely readers, should feel obligated to pay me. I’ll love and appreciate you no matter what, and you’ll get the same level of interaction and effort from me regardless.
So what do you think? To my fellow bloggers, how do you approach this money thing? I’m making this up as I go along, so suggestions, advice and feedback are welcome (and appreciated)!
