Unpopular opinion: I’m not really into social media

IMG_20171105_205324_533

I know that’s a weird thing to say, given that you’re technically reading this on a social media site, but I’m speaking more in terms of sites like Snapchat and Pinterest. Is Pinterest still a thing? I honestly don’t even know.

I guess part of the reason I’m not into some of this stuff is that it reminds me that I’m in my mid-30s. I know to some of you it doesn’t sound that old, but I’m not exactly some fresh-faced kid. I’m actively battling smile lines, crow’s feet and the occasional gray hair. My preferred method of communication prior to cell phones (because I remember a time before cell phones) was AOL Instant Messenger, and it’s so obsolete it’s being shut down soon.

I spent an hour sitting with my niece yesterday getting a Snapchat crash course, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I have no idea what I’m doing. What’s my motivation? Why do I need Snapchat? Why does anyone? Don’t all of the other features of our phones, like texting and Facebook Messenger and Hangouts, all essentially do the exact same thing? Why don’t we use these services anymore? And why do ‘snaps’ disappear so fast? I can’t remember what I said to someone five minutes ago; why can’t I go back and look at our snap history? Why do so many men feel the need to add random women and then send questionable photos? I have many unanswered questions folks.

Now I won’t sit here and pretend to be one of those people who decries the use of all modern technology. I happen to love technology. Technology gave us cool phones, Netflix, eBooks and magic machines that can tell us what foundation shade we should be wearing. I just don’t know whether or not I love being constantly connected to every other internet using human on the planet.

So what do you all think of social media? How many different sites do you use? You can check my About page for all of my social links, and if you feel so inclined, please follow/like/share etc.

Oh, and add me on Snapchat. Maybe you can show me how to work it.

I’m somewhere in the middle when it comes to social media. I hate talking on the phone, so it helps me stay in touch with people. I’m 37, so I too remember a time when you had to have actual face-to-face or audible conversation to communicate, so I welcome that change. I don’t get many of the random pics of privates like I used to when I was single and first on social media, thank God, but I never understood that either. As far as Snapchat, I like it, but don’t use it as much as I did when I first got it. It lost its new car smell for me lol.

I hate talking on the phone too! It comes from many years of working in call centers. I’m ever so thankful those days are behind me. I’m good with texting and Facebook, and I guess Instagram, but I’d be ok without the rest.

It’s nice to know there are some other Gen Y beauty bloggers out there!

I worked in a call center for a while too, so I totally understand. I feel like I talk all day long at work, as I do administrative work, so the absolute LAST thing I wanna do is talk to anyone by the end of the day lol.

I love that the beauty blogging world is becoming much more diverse in regard to age. Younger women and men aren’t the only ones that love makeup lol.

Omg that bitmoji facial expression says everything haha. I love your big opinion posts. I’m pretty into social media. Not that interested in twitter, but I use instagram and snapchat daily. I love using snapchat to send funny pictures to my friends. It really makes my regular work day entertaining.

Thank you so much for reading! What you can’t see is that’s not a bitmoji. It’s my actual face every time I try to use Snapchat 😀

I can see how it might be fun for people who work in traditional settings. I’m super lucky and get to work from home so when I get bored working I take a nap or do a face mask or something.
